Softeners remove hardness minerals (calcium and magnesium) that cause scale. Filters remove things like chlorine, sediment, sulfur, or iron. Plenty of homes need one, not both — a water test tells you which. ### How often do filters need to be changed? It depends on the system and your water. Sediment and carbon cartridges are commonly changed every 3–12 months; reverse osmosis membranes last longer. We'll give you a schedule specific to your setup. ### Can you get rid of the rotten-egg smell in my well water? Usually, yes. That smell is typically hydrogen sulfide, and it's treatable with the right oxidizing filter system. If it only shows up in hot water, the water heater's anode rod may be part of the problem — we check that too. ### Is reverse osmosis water safe to drink? Yes.
