Our process

How we handle it

  1. 01

    Diagnose safely

Power off, then we check for jams, tripped resets, wiring, and where exactly any leak is coming from.

  2. 02

    Repair what's repairable

Clear jams, reseal the sink flange, replace the dishwasher or drain connections, or fix the trap.

  3. 03

    Replace when it's done

A leak from the bottom of the unit means internal seals have failed — we'll install a properly sized replacement.

  4. 04

    Test everything

Run it, check the drain and dishwasher connection for leaks, and make sure it all flows.

Where it's leaking tells you a lot

A leak at the top usually means the sink flange seal has failed — repairable. From the side, it's typically the dishwasher inlet or the drain connection — also repairable. From the bottom of the unit, the internal seals have worn out and it's time for a replacement.

Humming without spinning usually means a jam. Most units have a hex socket on the bottom for freeing it, and a red reset button if the motor has overheated.

What not to put down the disposal

Grease and cooking oil, fibrous scraps like celery and corn husks, potato peels, pasta, rice, and coffee grounds cause most of the clogs we see. Run cold water while it's on and for a few seconds after.

If your home is on a septic system, ask us before adding or upgrading a disposal so it's a good fit for your tank.

FAQ

Garbage disposal repair: common questions

Why does my garbage disposal hum but not turn?

Usually something is jammed between the impeller plate and the grinding ring. With the power off, a hex key in the bottom socket can often free it. If that doesn't work, or it keeps jamming, give us a call.

Should I repair or replace my garbage disposal?

If the unit itself is leaking from the bottom, or the motor is failing, replacement is usually the better value. Jams, flange leaks, and connection leaks are typically repairable.

How long do garbage disposals last?

Many last around 8–12 years depending on use, motor size, and what goes down them.

Can I have a disposal on a septic system?

Often, yes — with the right unit and good habits. It does add solids to the tank, so we'll talk through whether it's a good fit for your system.
